Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 35 [Fleet Street, Shoe Lane, the Daily Express building and the new Daily Telegraph site]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 35, covers Fleet Street and St Bride Street (EC4) and takes in two newspaper palaces. At the time, these were the Daily Telegraph premises, with its proposed new building site, and the Daily Express premises. Behind their frontages lay printing machine rooms and reel stores. The Telegraph left in 1987, and its site became Goldman Sachs' Peterborough Court headquarters in 1991 as newspaper manufacture gave way to banking. The Express, in its black-glass building of 1932, was the last paper printed in Fleet Street, in November 1989. The sheet also names Gordon House and Ludgate House. These working plans were made for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction is the Daily Express reel-store and mezzanine development, labelled under construction in September 1969, which comes later than the January 1968 vacancy annotation in St Bride Street. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1940, with a 1950 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Ludgate Circus, Farringdon Street, Stonecutter Street, Little New Street, Printers Street, New Street Hill, Shoe Lane and Gough Square.
