Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 38 [Holborn Viaduct, Shoe Lane, St Andrew Holborn and the Evening Standard printing works]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 38, covers Holborn Viaduct and Shoe Lane (EC4), where the Evening Standard printing works, foundry, machine rooms and paper stores then stood beside the Fleet Telephone Exchange. All of this has given way to the Plumtree Court development, which opened as Goldman Sachs' European headquarters in 2019. The exchange's Dorothy Annan murals of 1960 went to the Barbican in 2013, and the Standard stopped daily printing in 2024. St Andrew Holborn, which was gutted in 1941 and rebuilt to Wren's design, remains a guild church. The sheet also names the Daily Mirror newspaper offices at Holborn Circus, Thavies Inn, the Holborn Viaduct vaults and the Prince Albert statue. Goad's working plans were made for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is a September 1969 vacancy annotation south of Holborn Viaduct. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include St Andrew Street, Farringdon Street, Stonecutter Street, Little New Street, New Street Square and New Fetter Lane.
