The Normandy invasion was planned, fought and recorded through maps. It includes plans of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches; German coastal defences and troop dispositions; Allied convoy routes, naval bombardment and air cover; airborne landings, marshalling areas and Mulberry harbours; and battlefield maps of Caen, Cherbourg, Saint-Lô and the Falaise pocket. Among the most evocative examples are restricted War Office and Admiralty sheets, BIGOT maps, maps carried or annotated in active service and later official histories reconstructing the operation. Together they reveal how cartography supported every stage of D-Day—from intelligence and planning to landing, supply, breakout and liberation.
