The Montmorency Falls drop eighty-three metres towards the St Lawrence near Quebec City, and the abrupt meeting of river, cliff and shore gave artists a dramatic subject from every angle. William Henry Bartlett's views of 1842 show the falls from the summit and beside their cove, and the natural steps on the river, Les Marches Naturelles. A view of 1874 places the waterfall in the wider St Lawrence landscape with Sainte-Pétronille, with a further view of the falls from 1895.
