Woodford Wells sits on the forest edge of Essex, one of the distinct clusters associated with Woodford, with Epping Forest on one side and the Roding valley on the other. Most of its maps date from the interwar years, with editions of 1923, 1928, 1933 and 1937 following Buckhurst Hill, Loughton and the roads around them as the district turned from forest fringe to suburb. The Chingford sheets of 1933 and 1937 run through the forest to Sewardstonebury and Suffield Hatch, and a map of 1964 reaches Chigwell. A print of 1888 shows the old parish church of Woodford together with All Saints, the church of Woodford Wells.
