Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 13 [Queen Victoria Street, Cannon Street, Cheapside and the Bucklersbury House site — obsolete copy]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 13, covers Poultry and Bucklersbury (EC4) in the edition marked "obsolete". This copy preserves the close-packed plots of Budge Row, Sise Lane and Tower Royal that Bucklersbury House swept away. Its final overlays, dated November 1955, record the clearance for Bucklersbury House and the Bank of London & South America under construction. The cleared building site on the sheet is where the Temple of Mithras was found in September 1954. The replacement edition of November 1956 maps the consolidated offices and, later, the reconstructed temple, which is now back on its original site beneath Bloomberg's European headquarters. The National Safe Deposit and the Bank of New Zealand shared the 1873 building on Queen Victoria Street that is now the City of London Magistrates' Court. The sheet also names Mappin & Webb silversmiths, Simpson's Restaurant and Barclays Bank. The Mappin & Webb building was demolished in 1994 to make way for No 1 Poultry. The plan was compiled for fire-risk assessment and updated with pasted slips recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. This sheet was reissued in November 1935, with a 1949 copyright date. Its latest dated correction is November 1955, and the replacement edition's 1956 reissue places the end of its regular updating at about 1956. Other streets on the sheet include Cheapside, Queen Street, Pancras Lane, Walbrook, Watling Street and Cannon Street.

November 1935 (reissue); copyright 1949. The latest explicitly dated correction we have identified on the sheet is November 1955. The replacement sheet was reissued in 1956, suggesting regular updating of this predecessor ceased around then. Key plans for other volumes acquired with this sheet record corrections up to March 1971, suggesting common working use until about that date.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Brown adhesive staining; large pasted clearance and OBSOLETE labels cross the map. Size excludes the tab at the side. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 14 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
