Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 16 [Cheapside, Milk Street, Wood Street and Gresham Street]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 16, covers Cheapside and Milk Street (EC2), with the offices of the Sun Life Assurance Society as its centrepiece. Founded in 1810, the Society moved its head office to Bristol in 1976 and passed wholly to AXA in 2000. The sheet also names the Stock Exchange checking room, Lawrence House, Clements House and Mitre House. The quarter was devastated on 29 December 1940 and rebuilt after the war, and it has largely been rebuilt again. Today the north side of Russia Row and Trump Street lies under 30 Gresham Street, Land Securities' block of 2002–03, which was the largest speculative office scheme in the capital when it was built. The plan was drawn so that insurers could assess property and fire risk, and it was kept current with pasted slips recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated corrections, from November 1970, include premises at 7 Milk Street, in block 177, marked vacant on the upper floors. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in December 1958, with a 1958 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Wood Street, Gresham Street, Lawrence Lane and King Street.
