Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 209 [St James's Square, Jermyn Street, Pall Mall and the Army & Navy Club]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 209, covers St James's Square (SW1) and the institutions that still define it. The London Library has been at No. 14 since 1845, and Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, has been at No. 10 since 1923. The clubs here fared in different ways. The Army & Navy Club rebuilt its Pall Mall clubhouse in 1963 and remains there, whereas the Junior Carlton Club replaced its Victorian house with offices in 1963–68 and merged into the Carlton Club in 1977. The Sports Club had already merged into the East India Club at No. 16 in 1938. On Jermyn Street, Rosa Lewis's Cavendish Hotel closed in June 1962 and reopened, rebuilt, in July 1966. Goad's plans were working documents for assessing property and fire risk, and they were updated with pasted overlays noting new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. On this sheet, vacancy annotations within the pasted revisions are explicitly dated October 1970, which is the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1942, with a 1950 copyright date, and the Volume IX key plan, acquired with the same group, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Duke Street, Duke of York Street, King Street and Pall Mall.
