Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 212 [Piccadilly, Old Bond Street, Burlington Arcade and Burlington House (Royal Academy)]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 212, covers Piccadilly, Old Bond Street and Burlington House (W1). The sheet shows the Royal Academy sharing its courtyard with the Linnean Society, the Geological Society and the Chemical Society. All of them are still there today, and the Chemical Society has been the Royal Society of Chemistry since 1980. Behind Burlington House, the sheet shows the British Museum's Ethnographical Department occupying the building later known as the Museum of Mankind, which closed in 1997. That use has gone, and 6 Burlington Gardens is now part of the Royal Academy's enlarged campus, linked through to Piccadilly in 2018. Fortnum & Mason, founded in 1707, still trades at 181 Piccadilly, and the Burlington Arcade of 1819 is still patrolled by its beadles, while the Royal Arcade and Princes Arcade are also marked. Goad's plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were corrected with pasted overlays as uses changed, layouts altered and buildings fell or rose; the sheet's latest dated correction is October 1970. The sheet was reissued in September 1938, with a 1950 copyright date, and the Volume IX key plan, acquired with the same group, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Albemarle Street, Jermyn Street, Burlington Gardens, Vigo Street, Sackville Street, Stafford Street and Duke Street.
