Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 242 [South Bank: Upper Ground, Stamford Street, Barge House Street and Stamford Wharf (the Oxo Tower)]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 242, covers Barge House Street and Stamford Street (SE1), and it is centred on Stamford Wharf, the cold store that is now Oxo Tower Wharf. Rebuilt in 1928–29 for the makers of Oxo, with tower windows that spell the name, the building appears here as the Union International cold stores. Coin Street Community Builders reopened it in 1996 with homes, designer-maker studios, shops and restaurants in place of bulk storage. The sheet shows Gabriel's Wharf and Nelson's Wharf adjoining it on the River Thames. The London Nautical School, founded in 1915, still teaches at 61 Stamford Street, and the sheet maps its gymnasium and playgrounds. These working plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. Here they note cold storage, wharf and warehouse occupancies and clearance, together with a Barge House Street vacancy dated March 1971, which is the latest dated correction. The sheet bears a December 1925 reprint date and a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Upper Ground, Coin Street, Duchy Street, Broadwall, Hatfields and Aquinas Street.
