Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 243 [Blackfriars Road, Stamford Street, Paris Garden and Sainsbury's premises]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 243, covers Blackfriars Road and Stamford Street beside Blackfriars Bridge (SE1), and it records J. Sainsbury's offices, stores and canteen around Stamford House. Offices and engineers' stores near Bennett's Mews are marked for demolition in March 1971. Sainsbury's left in 2001 and Stamford House came down in 2003. Its site now forms part of One Blackfriars, whose fifty-storey residential tower dates from 2018. Dorset House, built in 1931–33 for Iliffe's magazines, appears with the I.P.C. Business Press offices, warehouse and training school. Christchurch, which was rebuilt in 1958–59, still keeps its John Marshall Hall, and the riverside clearance sites on the River Thames became Sea Containers House in 1978. These plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet bears a December 1925 reprint date and a 1950 copyright date, and the latest dated correction identified on it is March 1971. The key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Upper Ground, Hatfields, Paris Garden and Rennie Street.
