Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 249 [Southwark: Great Suffolk Street, Union Street, Copperfield Street and H.M. Stationery Office]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 249, covers Union Street, Great Suffolk Street and Copperfield Street in Southwark (SE1), where H.M. Stationery Office then ran a manufacturing complex. Rotary printing, typecasting, binding and paper storage filled a whole block beside St Stephen's Parliamentary Press, so government publishing here was factory work rather than office routine. HMSO's publishing arm was privatised in 1996 as The Stationery Office. The sheet shows the former John Harvard school as the John Harvard Teachers Centre, beside a separate parcel post sorting office. Schweppes premises are recorded too, as is Laystall Engineering, which was founded in 1903 and is now in Wolverhampton. The sheet also names the National Provincial Insurance Co.'s glass warehouse and offices, a government garage and a recreation ground. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and this sheet carries numerous pasted slips recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated slip, of March 1971, marks premises in block 2371 vacant. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Risborough Street, Loman Street, Pocock Street, Sawyer Street, Pepper Street, Sturge Street, Glasshill Street, King's Bench Street and Argent Street.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 250 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
