Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 258–259 [Southwark Bridge Road, Great Suffolk Street and Borough Road]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 258–259, covers the Borough around Great Suffolk Street, Southwark Bridge Road and Borough Road (SE1), a working quarter that then served Fleet Street and the drinks trade. Here C. C. Dane Ltd's saw and knife factory stood near warehouses for Associated Newspapers and the Bass Charrington Vintners wines, spirits and beers warehouse. Associated Newspapers left the Fleet Street district for Kensington at the end of the 1980s. Printers' and electrical-goods warehouses rounded out this mix of metalworking, print supply and wholesale trade, which sat among an L.C.C. school, flats and shops. Lant Street, where the young Charles Dickens lodged in 1824 while his father was in the Marshalsea, also crosses the sheet. Goad revised these risk plans with pasted overlays as uses changed and as buildings were altered, demolished or replaced. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The sheet's latest dated corrections are vacancy labels on amended blocks, dated March 1971, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Webber Street, Glasshill Street, King's Bench Street, King James Street, Lancaster Street, Bittern Street, Toulmin Street and Pickwick Street.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 257 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
