Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 246 [Southwark: Blackfriars Road, Great Suffolk Street and Southwark Street]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 246, covers Blackfriars Road, Great Suffolk Street and Southwark Street (SE1), where Stevenson & Howell's manufacturing chemists' works then made essences and flavourings beside Spicers' paper warehouses and printing premises. Part of that site is now the Hilton London Bankside, whose Distillery bar recalls the works. Orbit House, which was the India Office Library's home from 1967, has given way to Will Alsop's Palestra of 2006, while the Edwards' Charity almshouses, rebuilt in 1973, are being rebuilt again. The sheet also shows City of Westminster College, Ponsonby Buildings, Burrell Street Works and the Southern Region Railway arches. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording changed uses, demolition and rebuilding. On this sheet, clearance around blocks 2342 and 2346 replaces smaller plots that are still shown on the January 1956 outline edition. A vacancy note on Blackfriars Road is dated May 1968, and the latest, near Treveris Street, is dated March 1971. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1950, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Nicholson Street, Chancel Street, Dolben Street, Scoresby Street, Union Street, Prices Street, Bear Lane and Gambia Street.
