Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 20 [Moorgate, Coleman Street, Basinghall Street and Gresham Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 20, covers Moorgate and Basinghall Street (EC2), where the banks then occupied more than conventional offices. On the sheet, several floors of Westminster Bank's premises are labelled for computers, recording the footprint of early banking technology beside workshops, stores and service spaces. The bank itself had merged with National Provincial to trade as National Westminster Bank from 1 January 1970. Armourers' Hall has been on its Coleman Street site since 1346 and survived the Great Fire and the Blitz. Gresham College, which was here from 1842, later lectured at City University, the Barbican and Mercers' Hall before settling at Barnard's Inn in 1991. The sheet also names Barclays Bank, Lloyds Bank, Chase Manhattan Bank, Girdlers' Hall, Austral House, Princes House and the Mayor's and City of London Court. The plan was made to assess property and fire risk, and it was kept current with pasted slips as uses and buildings changed. Its latest dated correction, from November 1970, marks a building on Great Bell Alley as under construction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1961, with a 1961 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include London Wall, Basinghall Avenue, Masons Avenue, Lothbury, Gresham Street and King Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Small split at the lower edge. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 19 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
