Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 254 [Newington Causeway, Borough Road, Southwark Bridge Road and the London Sessions House — uncoloured outline]

Goad's uncoloured outline fire insurance plan of London, sheet 254, covers Borough along Newington Causeway, Borough Road and Southwark Bridge Road (SE1), and it is centred on the London Quarter Sessions Court House. That sessions house of 1914–21 outlived the quarter sessions themselves, which were abolished from 1 January 1972, and it stands today as the listed Inner London Crown Court. Borough Road was home to Letts diaries, which were made at Diary House from 1934 until 1980. The sheet also names the Baptist Chapel, Queen's Buildings and the Southern Region railway. Reissued in March 1962, this outline records streets, footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans, and it shows the court and surrounding premises as plain footprints. Detailed coloured working editions were maintained separately, with successive occupancy revisions. Goad made these plans to assess property and fire risk, and pasted overlays on them recorded new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding. A key plan for this area acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Lancaster Street, Scovell Road, Harper Road, Avonmouth Street and Tiverton Street.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Sheet 255 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
