Allom's Northern Counties
Westmorland, Cumberland, Durham, and Northumberland, Illustrated, published by Fisher, Son & Co. of London in the early 1830s, is a finely produced topographical and historical work combining picturesque views with descriptive text. The illustrations—many drawn by the architectural and landscape artist Thomas Allom and other contributors—depict castles, abbeys, cathedrals, towns, and striking landscapes across the northern counties of England. This publication was part of Fisher’s wider series of regional illustrated volumes, aimed at a growing Victorian audience interested in travel, national heritage, and the romantic character of Britain’s provinces. Often issued in parts and later bound as complete volumes, Allom’s Northern Counties remains a visually rich and culturally valuable record of the north of England in the early 19th century.
