Daniel Glover Beers (1841–1913) mapped whole states house by house: his hand-coloured atlases name owners beside their homes and farms, mark mills, schools, churches and railways, and enlarge crowded villages into street plans, which is why family and local historians prize them. One of the Beers family of atlas makers, he surveyed Albany and Schenectady counties in New York with his brother Silas (1866), directed the surveys for the Atlas of the State of Delaware (1868), and published the Atlas of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (1870) under his own Philadelphia imprint, D.G. Beers & Co.; Pennsylvania county atlases followed, among them Northampton (1874). The maps we currently offer come from the Rhode Island atlas, several with subscribers’ business directories, and cover the state from Woonsocket and Pawtucket in the north to Westerly and Little Compton on the coast.
