Great British houses laid out in bird's-eye view, with their formal gardens, avenues and courts, fill these prints by Johannes Kip and Leonard Knyff, Dutch-born artists working in Britain in the early eighteenth century. Knyff (1650–1722) supplied the draughtsmanship and Kip (1653–1722) the engraving, and the 1709 impressions here are associated with Britannia Illustrata. Longleat, Althorp, Chatsworth and Cassiobury appear with royal and ecclesiastical sites at Windsor, Hampton Court and Lambeth, alongside less familiar houses and gardens since altered or lost. Several views explore Grimsthorpe from different approaches, and riverside London subjects bring the partnership to the capital.
