Le Keux, John
John Le Keux (1783–1846), the elder brother of fellow engraver Henry Le Keux (1787–1868), was a distinguished British engraver of Huguenot descent. Renowned for the precision and elegance of his architectural engravings, he contributed to some of the most important architectural and topographical publications of the 19th century. Le Keux's work featured prominently in John Britton and Augustus Welby Pugin’s Illustrations of the Public Buildings of London, where his engravings of architectural plans and elevations brought Gothic Revival design to a wider audience. He is perhaps best remembered for his evocative views of Oxford and Cambridge: his Oxford plates appeared in James Ingram’s Memorials of Oxford (1832–1837), while his self-published Memorials of Cambridge (1841–1842) offered a similarly comprehensive visual record of that university city. Several of his Cambridge plates were later reused in Charles Henry Cooper’s subsequent publication of the same title.
