L’Amérique Septentrionale publiée sous les auspices de Monseigneur le Duc d'Orleans [North America published under the auspices of Monseigneur the Duke of Orleans]

This fabulous map shows North America divided between British (red), French (Green) and Spanish (Yellow) possessions. At this time the British colonies of New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and Carolina, "Acadie" (Nova Scotia) and Newfoundland occupied a thin sliver along the coast, with the French controlling most of the interior of the continent, including much of present-day eastern Canada. The river systems, notably the Mississippi and Missouri, are well detailed, although the "Grand Riviere" flowing east into Lake Superior through the substantial "Lac des Bois" is a notable inaccuracy. Many towns are marked on the map, especially in the north east, including New York, Boston, Baltimore, Charles Town (Charleston), New Orleans, St Augustine, Philadelphia, Quebec City, Montreal, Havana, Mexico City, Cartagena. Forts, missions and areas occupied by Native American Indian tribes - including "Tecas" (Texas) - are shown. Florida appears rather anorexic and archipelagic compared to its actual shape. In the West Indies, the islands of Grenada and St Lucia are both marked in green as French colonies, as they were at the time - Grenada was ceded to Britain in 1763 and Britain did not regain its previous control of St Lucia until 1803. St Vincent and Dominica are uncoloured. Nassau is coloured red, indicative of a British colony, although the rest of the Bahamas are uncoloured, perhaps reflective of their then status as a haven for pirates

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
