'Andrews's New and Accurate Map of the Country Thirty Miles Round London, on which are Delineated from an Actual Survey, His Majesty's Palaces, Noblemen and Gentlemen's Seats, Cities, Market Towns, Villages, Churches, Rivers, Parks, Heaths & Remarkable Hills, all the Turnpike & most of the Cross Roads, with the Distances from Town to Town according to the Mile Stones.'
A large and impressive map of the country surrounding London, extending approximately thirty miles from the capital and embracing much of Middlesex, Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. Surveyed and engraved by John Andrews and published in 1783, it ranks among the most ambitious regional maps of the London area produced during the late eighteenth century, recording in remarkable detail the network of roads, market towns, villages, rivers, parks and landed estates that served the rapidly expanding metropolis. Richly engraved and attractively coloured, it provides a fascinating snapshot of the landscape surrounding Georgian London immediately following the American War of Independence. Dissected and laid on linen as issued, the map remains substantially complete but has separated along the original folds into three principal sections, comprising the main upper portion, a detached right-hand strip of six panels and a detached lower left block of four panels, with associated wear and fraying to the original linen. Despite these structural faults, it remains an attractive and historically important example, offering considerable scope for sympathetic conservation.
