[Archibald Campbell "Archie" MacLaren. Batsman. England Captain. Lancashire cricketer] A Brilliant batsman in his Harrow days, A.C. MACLAREN made a name for himself on his first introduction to County cricket with a score of over a hundred against Sussex. The records of Lancashire during the last four or five summers have placed him year after year in the forefront of the players of the day. Nor will his brilliant performances with MR. STODDART'S team in Australia last winter be soon forgotten. His return to England brought him fresh honours, and his remarkable innings of 424 for Lancashire against Somersetshire at Taunton in July broke the previous record for the best individual score in a first-class match held by W.G. GRACE since 1876 by 80 runs. A batsman with great pluck he plays all bowling with equal confidence, and when set scores very freely all round the wicket; in addition he is a fine field. He has captained the Lancashire Eleven lately with considerable success
