'As Hitler's "Mein Kampf" shows, Nazism points East'
Published in Fortune in December 1938, only months after Munich, and eight months before Hitler's invasion of Poland, this stark persuasive map warns that Hitler’s ambitions pointed east. Titled "As Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” Shows, Nazism Points East", it translates ideology into geography: Germany dominates the centre, while arrows and slogans indicate pressure toward Spain, Tunisia, Ethiopia, England but, above all, Russia and Eastern Europe. Rather than presenting a neutral political map, Fortune uses bold black boundaries, hatching and directional arrows to expose the logic of Lebensraum before the war began. The map’s force lies in its prescience. At a moment when appeasement still shaped Western policy, it argued that Nazi expansion was not opportunistic improvisation, but a programme already visible in Hitler’s own words.
