'Australian Colonies and New Zealand // New South Wales // Van Dieman's Land // South Australia // Australia Felix'
Rarely found on maps of New Zealand, the lower half of North Island is referred to as Province of North Durham, and the northern half of what is now South Island is referred to as the Province of South Durham. These were never official names for provinces or counties of New Zealand; they were presumably named after Lord Durham, one of the founders of the New Zealand Company, and proposed as such by that entity. Victoria has its early name of "Australia Felix" - it was named Victoria in 1851, around the time of publication of the map. This also corresponded with the Australian gold rush - although there is no key to confirm this, the areas coloured yellow appear to correspond with the places where gold was found.
