'Distribution of Nationalities in South-Eastern Europe'
"The cock-pit of Europe": the nationalities of the Balkans and the Habsburg south, mapped as the empire broke up. Hammond colours the Slavs (Poles, Ruthenians, Czechs and Slovaks, Slovenes, Serbo-Croats, Macedonian Slavs), the Bulgarians, Magyars and Turks, Italians and Roumanians, Albanians, Greeks and Germans, from Prague, Vienna and Cracow down to Constantinople, the Aegean and the heel of Italy. Its most pointed detail is the pink "Boundary of Concession to Italy by the Allies" along the Dalmatian coast: the secret Treaty of London of 1915, which the Bolsheviks had just published and which would poison the peace conference. Originally published in Two Thousand Questions and Answers About the War, New York 1918; printed across two pages, conjoined.
