'Battle of Waterloo, Gained over the French Commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte the 18th June 1815, by the English and Prussian Armies under the Orders of the Duke of Wellington and Prince Blucher.'
A striking and unusually detailed contemporary plan of the Battle of Waterloo, published in London by S. J. Neele on 26 January 1816, barely seven months after the battle. The circular battlefield plan records the opposing British, Prussian and French troop dispositions in contemporary hand colour around Mont St Jean, Hougoumont, La Haye Sainte, Plancenoit and La Belle Alliance, accompanied by extensive explanatory text and a comprehensive table of British and Hanoverian regiments with their casualties. Produced at a time when public interest in Waterloo was at its height, it is an ambitious separately published military broadside rather than a conventional book illustration. We have traced no institutional holding of this exact edition, although the Royal Collection preserves a closely related Waterloo plan. Likewise, we have found no recent commercial offering of this exact map, underlining its apparent rarity. Original hand colour. The explanatory text refers to a "2d Position", but no movable overlay is present and there is no clear evidence that one was ever attached to this example. General age-toning and light surface soiling.
