Creully—Defences—Sheet No. 37/18 S.E.—GSGS 4347—[Defence overprint print code] 5/44/13MRS/1265—STOP PRESS EDITION OF 20 MAY 1944—BIGOT COPY No. 1410—TOP SECRET until issued for briefing to ground troops, thereafter SECRET
A rare survival from the most closely guarded preparations for D-Day: a BIGOT map of Gold and Juno beaches, issued only to named personnel cleared to know where and when the invasion would take place. Extending from Arromanches to Bernières-sur-Mer and inland around Creully, it plots German strongpoints, artillery, beach obstacles, inundations, roads and bridges. At 1:25,000, G.S.G.S. 4347, Second Edition, this “Stop Press Edition of 20 May 1944”—seventeen days before the landings—incorporates intelligence current to 19 May. BIGOT-cleared personnel faced strict travel restrictions; secrecy was so intense that, when ten such officers went missing during Exercise Tiger, an exhaustive search continued until all were accounted for. The name is said to be a reversal of the “TO GIB” (“to Gibraltar”), markings used for the North African landings. Classified “TOP SECRET” until troop briefing, this operationally annotated sheet is an immediate and compelling relic of Overlord’s danger, urgency and meticulous planning.
