'Principal Cities & Ports in Canada'
Far more than a token montage of city plans, this sheet gives four distinct views of pre-Confederation urban Canada and its transport geography. Kingston is placed within the Cataraqui and St Lawrence waterways, with the Rideau Canal, adjoining lakes and approaches to the harbour clearly traced. Toronto shows its still-compact street grid spreading north from Lake Ontario along Yonge and Dundas streets, with the harbour and Gibraltar Point. Montreal is mapped across the full island, recording concession roads, settlements and communications between the St Lawrence and Rivière des Prairies. The largest panel sets fortified Quebec within a broad strategic landscape extending to Charlesbourg, Beauport, Montmorency Falls and Île d’Orléans, and explicitly marks the battlefield of 13 September 1759. Joan Winearls’s cartobibliography identifies Swanston’s four panels as reductions of the insets on Edward Staveley’s important 1844 Map of Canada—useful evidence of their Canadian cartographic pedigree.
