'Carte des environs de Paris, comprenant partie des gouvernemens généraux de l’Isle de France, de Normandie, d’Orléanois et de Champagne'
Paris a few years before the Revolution: a compact city inside its boulevards, with Montmartre, Belleville, Passy, Auteuil and Vaugirard still separate villages. Louis Brion de la Tour, Ingénieur-Géographe du Roi, drew this map for the Campion brothers in 1782. It reaches from Château Gaillard on the Seine to the borders of Champagne, north to Compiègne and south to Fontainebleau and Chartres, and shows the royal forests cut by their star-shaped hunting rides, and hundreds of villages, châteaux and abbeys; Versailles, Marly, Saint-Germain and Chantilly all fall within it. In the cartouche, signed by Viguet, a putto wears Mercury’s winged helmet among garlands and cornucopias. This is the 1782 issue, a year earlier than the earliest dated copy we have traced in an institutional collection.
