Charles Darwin’s comparative plate brings together the Great Chagos Bank and a section across it; Menchicoff Atoll (Kwajalein); Mahlos Mahdoo (Maalhosmadulu) with Horsburgh Atoll (Goidhoo); New Caledonia; and the Maldiva Archipelago. Compiled principally from hydrographic surveys by Captain Robert Moresby and Lieutenant F. T. Powell, with material from Krusenstern’s atlas and Captain Hagemeister, it records soundings, submerged banks and sharply contrasting reef forms. These were evidence, not simply geographical illustrations. Darwin supplied the first comprehensive, testable explanation of how coral islands developed: reef-building corals remain near the sunlit surface while their volcanic foundations slowly subside, so fringing reefs become separated from the land as barrier reefs and ultimately survive as ring-shaped atolls after the central island disappears. First published in 1842 in The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs—one of the foundational works of modern reef geology—this is a later 1895 printing, engraved by J. & C. Walker.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us. If you have changed your mind, you are responsible for the cost of returning the item to us. We describe the size, age and condition of all our products as fully and accurately as possible.
