Chanel Paris [arrondissement and metro map]
The garment is undated, but can be dated as having been manufactured between 1970 and 1975 by reference to information on the printed map. The 5e and 19e arrondissements are emphasised by means of the prefix "No." (ie "No. 5" and "No. 19"), corresponding with Chanel's two numbered perfumes of the time. No. 19 was launched as a new product in 1970; we suspect that the scarf was manufactured to correspond with its launch. The map is overlaid with a Metro map. The Line 13 branch to St Denis is absent, dating the scarf to before its opening 1976. There are no RER lines on the map, the first of which opened in 1977, however Metro line 7bis is present, which opened in 1967. Metro stations are represented by white circles containing the Chanel logo, except for Malesherbes, which contains a pink circle as a nod to Chanel's first millinery shop at 160 Boulevard Malesherbes, opened in 1909. République contains a white Chanel logo on a dark background; the reasons for this differentiation are unclear.
