Proposed Extensions of South Western Railway. Plan showing the South Western Railway extended to York Road and a connection upon the High Level with the Charing Cross Bridge, when altered into a Carriage Road [left]; Plan showing the South Western Railway extended to the River and a connection upon the High Level with the Charing Cross bridge, when altered into a Carriage Road [centre]; Plan for extension of South Western Railway with a Station on Thames on the site of the present Charing Cross Bridge [right]
At the time of the publication of the map, various proposals to provide a railway terminus into the West End of London were being considered by extending existing rail lines north over Hungerford Bridge. This map shows three alternative proposals for termini and rail routes running to Charing Cross, including variously rail lines connecting to those at London Bridge station to the east, to Waterloo station to the south, and including a "Station on Thames" spanning Hungerford Bridge. Charing Cross station, designed by Sir John Hawkshaw, was eventually built to the north of the river on the site of the Hungerford Market and opened on 11 January 1864
