'Charles Dickens' London 1812–1870'
Kenneth Baxendale’s large pictorial map brings Dickens’s London to life through the streets his characters inhabited, framed by a lively gallery including Pickwick, Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Miss Havisham and Scrooge. Published in 1983, it combines an intricate historical street plan with 124 numbered locations and a detailed literary index. Fagin’s den in Field Lane, the Marshalsea of Little Dorrit and the Chancery world of Bleak House sit alongside Dickens’s Doughty Street home and the blacking factory at Hungerford Stairs where he worked as a boy. Coverage extends from Hyde Park to the East End docks and south across the Thames to Southwark and Deptford. A portrait of Dickens, a horse-drawn coach and an ornate border complete the composition. Printed in black on a warm buff ground, this expansive literary panorama rewards close reading as well as display.
