'Chart of the British Isles, To accompany Mr Lubbock’s Paper on the Tides.'
A large early thematic chart of the British Isles and adjacent seas, combining observed high-water times with coastal depth contours. Roman figures beside the coast give high-water time in Greenwich time at new and full moon; italic figures give local time, while the offshore curves show depth in fathoms rather than Whewell-style cotidal lines. Lubbock compiled the chart from surveys and observations by M’Kenzie, Spence, Murray, Hewett, Thomas, Huddart, White and Nimmo, together with Admiralty charts. Issued with his pioneering 1831 Royal Society paper and engraved by J. & C. Walker, it documents the observational foundation on which Whewell’s later cotidal mapping was built.
