[Untitled Globe Gore - Azores and Cape Verde Islands / Central North Atlantic Ocean]
A beautifully engraved late-seventeenth-century globe gore by Vincenzo Coronelli, intended to form one segment of his monumental 110 cm terrestrial globe, depicting the central part of the North Atlantic Ocean from the Equator to the Grand Banks with the Azores and Cape Verde Islands. The track of Chaumont’s 1685–86 French embassy to Siam is shown. The sheet also includes the phantom Islands of St Brendan and Sao Pedro, the former placed mid-ocean between the Azores and Cape Verde—an imagined landfall rooted in supposed medieval sightings and shown on some European maps well into the seventeenth century despite repeated unsuccessful attempts to locate it. Coronelli's globe gores are uncommon.
