Distribution of the Aryan Races—Satirical anti-Nazi racial ideology map—Kem 1937
SKU
'Distribution of the Aryan Races'
A lithographed satirical, serio-comic political map by Kem, the professional pseudonym of Kimon Evan Marengo, a British political cartoonist of Greek descent. Conceived as a critique of Nazi racial ideology, the map divides Europe and parts of Asia and North America into a patchwork of deliberately absurd “racial” and ideological categories. These are expressed through verbal puns and exaggerated stereotypes—such as Proletaryans, Hot-Aryans, Antiquaryans, and Revolutionaryans—that parody Nazi attempts to reduce racial diversity to pseudo-scientific typologies. Terms that may now appear offensive were employed ironically, intending to undermine, rather than endorse, racialised thinking. Produced on the eve of the Second World War, it stands as an cartographic rebuttal to Fascist racial ideology. Today, its lighthearted, comic tone sits uneasily with the later revelations of the Holocaust; however, Marengo’s intent was consistently anti-fascist, and his satire was directed at the ideological classification itself: upon the outbreak of war in 1939, Marengo joined the Ministry of Information, producing some 3,000 propaganda posters, leaflets, and cartoons in multiple languages, including Arabic dialects and Persian. He also worked with the Political Warfare Executive in France, North Africa, and the Middle East, contributing material that was at times dropped behind enemy lines by RAF aircraft, and he was present at the Tehran Conference in 1943. After the war, Marengo returned to Oxford, where he completed a doctoral thesis entitled The Cartoon as a Political Weapon in England: 1783–1832.
