'Map 1—East Africa: General'
A large late-colonial planning map covering Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika, with Zanzibar and Pemba, from Sudan and Ethiopia south to Northern Rhodesia and Mozambique. Roads and railways are shown against territorial, provincial and district boundaries. Red identifies alienated land—land granted or leased by the colonial state, principally to non-African settlers—and the European-reserved Kenyan Highlands. Prepared for the East Africa Royal Commission, 1953–1955, it provided the geographical framework for an inquiry into raising living standards through land reform, agricultural development, communications and economic expansion. The Commission was conceived before the Mau Mau Emergency, but the rebellion, rooted partly in Kenyan land hunger and dispossession, gave its work exceptional urgency. Published in 1955, the map exposes the racialised geography within which the Commission attempted to reconcile African population pressure, settler landholding and the development of East Africa’s resources.
