Map 2—East Africa: Population, Tsetse Fly and Rainfall [The prospect of obtaining 20 inches of rainfall]
An analytical map combining population, disease ecology, rainfall reliability and colonial landholding across Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika. Based on the 1948 census, each dot represents 5,000 people; towns give total and African populations. Hatching records tsetse infestation, whose transmission of sleeping sickness and animal trypanosomiasis restricted settlement, cattle keeping and mixed farming. Red marks alienated land—principally land granted or leased by the colonial state to non-African settlers—and Kenya’s European Highlands. Colour grades the likelihood of annual rainfall failing to reach 20 inches, distinguishing potentially cultivable country from land essentially suited to pastoralism. Prepared for the East Africa Royal Commission, 1953–1955, it helped assess where population pressure and environmental limitations permitted agricultural expansion or resettlement. Although conceived before the Mau Mau Emergency, the inquiry acquired greater urgency as rebellion exposed Kenya’s interlocking problems of land hunger, unequal tenure and rural poverty.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us.
