Published months after Britain repossessed the Falkland Islands, this September 1833 article from The Nautical Magazine, accompanied by its dated monthly title page, contains the very important editorial declaration: “We have now taken possession of these islands.” The footnote appeared after HMS Clio expelled the Buenos Aires garrison and raised the British flag at Port Louis. It anticipates colonisation, proposes a supply station for vessels rounding Cape Horn, asserts British priority of discovery, notes no indigenous population and rejects American title. The principal article considers claims that the Southern Hemisphere became progressively colder toward the pole, citing climatic observations from Spanish, French and British Falklands establishments. Its scientific discussion provides the setting for an unusually immediate statement of British possession. The combination of dated title page, climatic evidence and emphatic editorial footnote makes this an important contemporary record of the transition from British naval repossession to prospective permanent British settlement.

Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us.
