'Championnat du Monde—Grand Prix de France F1—Clermont Ferrand 2 Juillet 1972'
An attractive pictorial bird’s-eye course map for the 1972 Formula One French Grand Prix, held at Clermont-Ferrand on 2 July. It depicts the spectacular Circuit de Charade, a sinuous 8.055 km mountain road circuit laid out on the volcanic slopes above the city, with Royat, Puy de Charade, Puy de Gravenoire, Thedes, spectator enclosures, paddock and parking clearly marked. Charade hosted the Formula One French Grand Prix only four times — in 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972 — making this a record of its final World Championship appearance. The race was won by Britain’s Jackie Stewart in a Tyrrell-Ford, while Chris Amon’s fastest lap of 2:53.900 remains the all-time lap record for this circuit configuration. Punctures caused by volcanic debris and limited run-off made Charade increasingly unsuitable for modern Formula One, which moved to Paul Ricard in 1973.
