[Frederick William Tate. Off-spin bowler. Sussex cricketer] If only played occasionally now by the Sussex Committee, TATE was a few years ago one of the most reliable fast bowlers in the South of England. A native of Brighton, and trained almost directly under the notice of the Sussex Authorities, his cricket was not likely to be overlooked. For a time, too, he bore the brunt of the bowling for the County, and with no inconsiderable success. As late as 1892, he was the mainstay of the Eleven in bowling, delivering three hundred overs more than anyone else on the side and taking eighty-eight out of an aggregate of two hundred and ninety-four wickets. At his best he was a very useful fast bowler, difficult to tire, and on certain wickets at times most destructive. A hard working all-round Cricketer, he has always done his best for his side
