Froggett's Survey of the country thirty miles round London 1833 [range: Godalming - Tonbridge - Chatham - Hertford - Maidenhead]
A large and detailed map including a number of interesting features. The "Limit of the Twopenny Post" is shown in purple - at the time of publication, the cost of sending a letter to a town was 2 pence, and to the countryside 3 pence. The map also shows the Surrey Iron Railway, a very early (pre-steam) horse-drawn narrow-gauge plateway that linked Wandsworth and Croydon via Mitcham. It was established by Act of Parliament in 1801, and opened partly in 1802 and partly in 1803. The Croydon canal is marked: it ran 9 miles from Croydon, via Forest Hill, to the Grand Surrey Canal at New Cross; it opened in 1809 and closed in 1836, the first canal to be abandoned by an Act of Parliament.
