'Germany, the Beautiful Travel Country'
Walter Riemer’s exuberant pictorial map transforms pre-war Germany into a crowded theatre of castles, cathedrals, industry, agriculture and outdoor recreation, framed by civic arms and the repeated slogan “Beautiful Germany”. Beneath its gaiety lies a carefully managed image of the Third Reich: swastika flags punctuate the tourist scenes, while an inset makes Germany a dominant red mass at the centre of Europe. The verso is equally revealing. Alongside visitor information on cities, spas, railways, shipping and air travel is a transport map distinguishing Reich motor roads already open, under construction, sanctioned and projected, plus an inset of German air routes. The text credits Hitler with initiating the Autobahn programme, celebrates National Socialist “regeneration” and presents “work, honour and peace” as the ideals of the new Germany. References to winter 1937–38 services, the end-1937 road network and the anticipated resumption of the transatlantic airship service in the still-uncompleted LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin identify this as the revised issue of early 1938.
