'Global Pattern of the Red Offensive'
Striking Cold War persuasive map published by Time Inc. at one of the tensest moments of the conflict. Against a black ground, the Soviet Union and China form a solid red-orange Communist alliance, while allied “free nations” appear in green, non-aligned states in yellow and troubled or contested countries in orange. Sweeping red arcs and white outlined arrows represent ideological penetration and “armed red pressure”, transforming complex geopolitics into a dramatic narrative of communist encirclement. Cuba is presented as a forward base in the Americas; divided Germany, Korea and Vietnam, together with Laos, Burma, the Congo and the Middle East, become points of pressure around the communist bloc. The map accompanied John K. Jessup and the Editors of Life’s one-dollar educational booklet Communism: The Nature of Your Enemy. Its inclusion in Cornell University’s P. J. Mode Collection of Persuasive Cartography recognises its significance as a vivid example of mass-market American anti-communist graphic design in 1962.
