Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 10 [St Paul's Cathedral, St Paul's Churchyard, Paternoster Row and Cheapside]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 10, covers St Paul's Cathedral and Paternoster Row (EC4), with the cathedral dome and towers, the Queen Anne statue and the Remembrance Garden at its centre. Car parks north of the cathedral and a bank-and-office development beside Cheapside are shown under construction in December 1969, so the sheet holds the redevelopment at an intermediate stage. The Central Electricity Generating Board offices, meanwhile, belonged to an earlier Paternoster Square, which was rebuilt again and reopened in 2003 with the London Stock Exchange among its offices and shops. The St Paul's Cathedral Choir School, in its New Change buildings of the 1960s, still trains the cathedral's boy choristers, who have been joined by girls since September 2025. The City information centre was rehoused in 2007, while St Paul's itself remains the sheet's fixed landmark. The plan was compiled to price fire risk and revised with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building, and December 1969 is its latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1962, with a 1962 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include St Paul's Churchyard, Ludgate Hill, Newgate Street, Cannon Street, Carter Lane and Godliman Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 9 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
