Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 17 [Old Jewry, Poultry, Cheapside and the Midland Bank head office]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 17, covers Old Jewry and Poultry (EC2), where Lutyens's Midland Bank head offices, built in 1924–39 with strong rooms and extensive office floors, are now The Ned. Midland passed to HSBC in 1992 and lost its name in 1999. In 2017 the head offices were converted to a hotel, restaurants and a members' club, a conversion that gave a major banking building a new role in the City's visitor economy. Mercers' Hall was burnt out in 1941 and reopened in May 1958, while Grocers' Hall, gutted by fire in 1965, was rebuilt beside the Bank of England in 1970. The sheet also names the Commonwealth Savings and Trading Bank of Australia, St Margaret's churchyard and the Scottish Life offices. The plan was compiled for fire-risk assessment and kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its latest dated correction is a vacancy note on Gresham Street, dated November 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1942, with a 1949 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Cheapside, King Street, Lothbury, Ironmonger Lane, Princes Street and Mansion House Street.
