Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 18 [London Wall, Aldersgate Street, Wood Street and Gresham Street — obsolete copy]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 18, covers London Wall and Aldersgate Street (EC2). This is the "obsolete" edition, which records the new London Wall road and car park under construction in November 1959 through an older warehouse district. The sheet shows Battersby's hat warehouse, cotton-yarn premises and a railway goods shed north of the new road. These details evoke the trading and distribution quarter that was then being swept away around Silver Street, Monkwell Street, Castle Street, Fell Street, Nicholl Square and Wood Street Square. Barbers' Hall, burnt out in 1940, reopened on Monkwell Square in 1969, and St Anne and St Agnes church is now the VOCES8 Centre. The sheet also names Haberdashers' Hall, the Metropolitan Telephone Exchange, the Nestle offices, St Mary Staining churchyard and Northern House. The plan was made for fire-risk assessment and updated with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. This sheet was reissued in November 1932, with a 1949 copyright date, and its latest dated correction is from November 1959. The replacement edition of November 1960, which shows larger office blocks, Lee House, Monkwell Square and the rebuilt Barbers' Hall, places the end of this sheet's regular updating at about 1960. Other streets on the sheet include St Martin's-le-Grand, Gresham Street, Wood Street, Oat Lane and Staining Lane.

Size 63 x 53 cm | 24.5 x 21.0 inches

Date Published: 1932 (1959)

November 1932 (reissue); copyright 1949. The latest explicitly dated correction we have identified on the sheet is November 1959. The replacement sheet was reissued in 1960, suggesting regular updating of this predecessor ceased around then. Key plans for other volumes acquired with this sheet record corrections up to March 1971, suggesting common working use until about that date.

Type: Vintage hand-coloured fire-insurance plan with later overpasted amendments

Insurance Plan of London, Volume I. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 17 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
