Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 204 [Holborn: High Holborn, Bedford Row, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn Fields]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 204, covers legal Holborn between Bedford Row and Chancery Lane (WC1 and WC2), running from Gray's Inn Place and Fulwood Place down to Lincoln's Inn Fields. Lincoln's Inn Stone Buildings, Sir Robert Taylor's range of 1774–80, are still barristers' chambers, and Bedford Row's Georgian houses have since filled with the Bar's leading sets. First Avenue House, the office block at 42–49 High Holborn, was bomb-damaged in the Second World War and is today the Central Family Court. The plan also names the Ministry of Defence offices, Princeton College, Princeton House and Lincoln House. Photo-printing, lithography and bookbinding around Hand Court and Brownlow Street, with publishers in Great Turnstile, reveal a concentration of trades that reproduced and circulated printed information. Their presence beside legal Holborn records the physical work behind documents and books, while court papers can now be filed and managed electronically through HMCTS's E-Filing service. Goad's working plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is September 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1960, with a 1960 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Red Lion Street, Sandland Street, Jockey's Fields, Hand Court, Brownlow Street, Warwick Court, Great Turnstile, Whetstone Park and Newman's Row.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VIII. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Small surface abrasion in the lower half. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 203 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
