Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 228 [Oxford Street, New Bond Street, John Lewis and D.H. Evans]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 228, covers Oxford Street and New Bond Street (W1), where John Lewis and D. H. Evans dominated at the time, with extensive stockrooms and workrooms behind their sales floors. John Lewis then occupied the Slater, Moberly and Uren store, which was completed in 1960, and Hepworth's Winged Figure followed in April 1963. John Lewis still trades there today, whereas D. H. Evans became House of Fraser in 2001, closed in January 2022 and has since entered redevelopment as the Elephant, for office, retail and leisure use. F. W. Woolworth's chain closed in January 2009, while the auction rooms at Blenheim Street and Woodstock Street, which were then Phillips's, are now Bonhams' headquarters after the firms merged in 2001. The plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction on this sheet is October 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1962, with a 1962 copyright date, and a key plan covering this area, acquired with the same group of maps, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Brook Street, Tenterden Street, Dering Street, Hanover Square, Harewood Place, Henrietta Place, Old Cavendish Street, Holles Street and South Molton Street.
